Overview

Under the National Electricity Law (NEL), AEMO may determine fees and charges for services provided by it under the NEL and the National Electricity Rules (NER). AEMO is required under the NER to develop a NEM Participant Fee Structure in consultation with stakeholders.

The fee structure consultation determines both how and from whom AEMO recovers the costs for providing services, including performing its statutory functions under the NEL and the NER. While the allocation methodology is reviewed through consultation, the actual fee amounts are set annually through AEMO’s budgeting process.

Final Determination

AEMO has released its Final Determination for the NEM Participant Fee Structures to apply from 1 July 2026. This follows an extensive consultation process, including the publication of a Consultation Paper in April 2025 and a Draft Determination in September 2025 for stakeholder consideration and feedback. During the consultation period, AEMO also engaged directly with Registered Participants, industry associations and consumer groups and held several public webinars.

The publication of the Final Determination concludes the consultation to establish the new fee structure, which will apply from 1 July 2026 until 30 June 2031.
