Transgrid has published the Project Assessment Draft Report (PADR) for Complying with reactive margin requirements at Beryl. Publication of this PADR represents the second step in the RIT-T process and follows the Project Specification Consultation Report (PSCR) and Expression of Interest (EOI) published in November 2024.
The Transgrid Beryl 132/66 kV Bulk Supply Point (BSP) currently supplies the Essential Energy distribution network, with end customers comprising a mixture of agricultural, residential and mining customers. As set out in our revenue proposal for the current (2023-28) regulatory control period, and most recent Transmission Annual Planning Report (TAPR), we have identified reactive margin shortfall (and voltage) issues in the Beryl area in light of current and projected demand in the downstream Essential Energy.
Transgrid published a PADR for complying with reactive margin requirements at Beryl on 17 February 2026. In the PADR, Transgrid presented three credible options that would meet the identified need from a technical, commercial, and project delivery perspective.
The PADR analysis has benefited from stakeholder consultation. In the PSCR, we considered non-network solutions that can provide dynamic and static reactive support may be able to assist with meeting the identified need. We received Expression of Interest (EOI) responses from two parties regarding non-network solutions. Both parties requested confidentiality and consequently we have not published their responses on our website. The responses have played a key role in developing the PADR and Transgrid thanks both parties for their time and effort to-date.
The assessment in this PADR finds that Option 2 (install a static VAR compensator (SVC) of +50 MVAr to -10 MVar at Beryl) is the preferred option to meet the identified need. The estimated capital cost of Option 2 is $41.1m ($2025-26).
Transgrid welcomes written submissions on materials contained in this PADR. Submissions are due on 1 April 2026 and should be emailed to Transgrid’s Regulation team via [email protected]. In the subject field, please reference, ‘Complying with reactive margin requirements at Beryl PADR.
