Directions to VIC Generators – 24 October 2024 and 14/15 November 2024

On 24 October 2024, 14 November 2024, and 15 November 2024, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) issued directions to Victorian Market Participants to maintain the system within secure operating limits.

On 24 October 2024, a planned outage of the Moorabool-Sydenham No.1 500 kV line required 8 Latrobe Valley units to be online for sufficient system strength. Following the outage of Yallourn W1, intervention was required by AEMO in the form of directions for provision of system strength. Similar circumstances arose on the 14 and 15 November 2024 during a planned outage of the Moorabool-Sydenham No.2 500 kV line. The unplanned outage of Loy Yang A2 resulted in only 6 Latrobe Valley units being online, which required AEMO to issue directions for provision of system strength.

Where AEMO intervenes in the National Electricity Market (NEM) through the use of directions, AEMO must publish a report in accordance with National Electricity Rules (NER) clauses 4.8.9(f) and 3.13.6A.

The NEM Event report below satisfies those NER obligations and is based on information available to AEMO at the time of publication:
